Wet laying up is the traditional method of composite manufacture, and is
the method most people would think of. Resin is transferred from a pot to the fabric using a brush and is then worked into the fibres by dabbing. This is by no means a low-tech solution as a skilled laminator can work to very close resin to fibre ratios once a system has been developed. Used badly this method can produce dry or resin rich laminates and is therefore usually limited to general rather than high performance uses. Either epoxy or polyester resin systems can be used although epoxy resin offers better performance. Improvement to the quality of the laminate can be obtained by vacuum consolidating the laminate during curing. High temperature resin systems are also available, with operating temperatures of between 180 and 230 deg C. Without doubt wet laying is by far the most widely used and the most versatile manufacturing technique available. |
