Composite sailplane inspection and repair 5 day course

The repair of modern composite gliders has been a bit of a black art for many years, but with these gliders far more common than wooden ones we thought it was time to throw open our doors and show you how it is done.

The courses are mainly aimed at BGA approve inspectors and has the support and backing of the BGA Technical committee who like us realise the need for specialist training in this area.

The courses are run within our workshop and take place in relaxed and informal surroundings. Each student has their own working area and full set of tools.

The course made up of lecture sessions followed by practical demonstrations and student workshop time.

In all each student can expect about 16 hours of workshop practical over the five days of the course.

While it may not be possible to develop all the skill in this time the combination of both practical and theory give a good insight to the problems and solutions available.

Over the week the students cover the following areas:-

Basic laminating Glider construction
Assessing damage Material selection and identification
Basic sandwich repair techniques Taking moulds and splashes
Single skin repair techniques Common damage and simple repair schemes
Finishing repairs Health and safety issues

Each student will complete 7 exercises ranging from a simple channel section through to several real repairs on sections of gliders.

Because we use real sections from gliders the student can see theory turn in to practice and the relevance of what has been discussed.

The exercises have been designed to take the course members quickly through the basics of laminating and on to repairs in a very short yet meaningful way.

We have invested in modern IT equipment so that our course lectures are clear, concise and presented in such a way as to promote learning. Course members are actively encouraged to participate in the lectures and contribute though their own experiences. This method of learning allows all students to benefit from others and throws up many interesting questions that bring the group into discussion.

Due to commercial limitation we plan on running 2 or 3 courses a year. For practical reason these tend to be in the spring and autumn when gliding is not so demanding. Current demand for the courses is high with applicants approaching us many months in advance.
